In 1946, Ansel Adams received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, a generous grant that enabled him to continue the mural project he had initially started in 1941. Renewed in 1948, the fellowship helped carry him farther than he and his camera had ventured before, visiting Alaska and Hawaii to photograph glaciers, volcanic islands, and tropical gardens.

Beginning in 1920, at just eighteen years old, Adams joined the Club's legendary annual High Trips—multi-week expeditions that brought hundreds of participants deep into the mountains of California.
