Deluxe Posters. Signed by Ansel Adams

Printed c. 1981-1982 by the New York Graphic Society in partnership with Ansel Adams, these limited edition, deluxe signed posters showcase three of Ansel’s most famous photographs:  “Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite Valley” “Moonrise Hernandez, New Mexico,” and “Aspens, Northern New Mexico.” According to the brochures that advertised them at the time, they were intended for collectors within “[Adams’] largest audiences” of “amateur photographers, students, photo enthusiasts, and nature lovers of all ages,” who wanted badly to collect high-quality prints of his work, but could not have afforded one of his original prints.

Although posters of Ansel’s work were already regularly sold, these deluxe posters, measuring 25 ½ x 36 inches, were the highest quality that could be produced at the time, both in image reproduction and presentation. Each image was printed using “offset lithography from state-of-the-art laser scanned duotone separations on fine, coated paper.” The images were then placed into an embossed area on handmade 100% rag paper, with a decorative deckled edge. The poster’s type is debossed and printed letterpress, and each poster is additionally watermarked with Ansel’s “AA” and the printer’s logo. All 350 limited edition deluxe posters were carefully inspected and approved by Ansel, before he numbered and signed each one.

Only 350 of these deluxe posters were printed in 1981-1982 as part of this special release, and fewer than that survive today. They are truly unique pieces, not just in their carefully crafted design, but because they are one of the few instances where Ansel partnered to create high quality reproductions of his own work.
